ALASKA HEALTH CARE COMMISSION

Governor Palin, a number of Legislators and many Alaskans would like an Alaska Health Care Commission to be established to continue the work begun by the short term Alaska Health Care Strategies Planning Council.  The Commission would be tasked with finding solutions to issues that would improve access to, and quality and cost-effectiveness of, health care for Alaskans – including access to affordable health coverage.  AHAAT’s recommendation for the composition of the membership of the Commission is discussed here.

HEALTH INSURANCE REFORM LEGISLATION

Learn about SB 160 which proposed a health insurance mandate that would require all Alaskans to purchase health insurance. Although AHAAT does not endorse this legislation, it is encouraged that the problem of the uninsured is being addressed and discussed in Alaska.

ALASKA HEALTH PLANNING GRANT PRESENTATION

US Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) “State Planning Grant” funds were awarded to Alaska for September 2005 – August 2006 with a no-cost extension granted through August 2007 for supporting in-depth studies of policy options (including costs and benefits, political ramifications, and results from other state’s initiatives) and research into who and what groups in the state are uninsured and why.
The project goals in Alaska are to do necessary data gathering to provide insight into the complexities of health insurance coverage, and to identify options for making affordable health insurance available to Alaskans currently uninsured. Collaboration with stakeholders and with partners within state government is considered critical to success.
